A return to school for RHSS students

School is back and we couldn’t be happier to see all our 33 sponsored students back in class at Rainbow Hope Secondary School.

Getting back to school in rural Malawi can be difficult at times. In the case of Rainbow Hope students, it can take weeks until a student is back to school and there are many factors contributing to this, mainly, difficulties in communication – some parents/guardians are unable to keep track of the dates relayed by the school or government. Others have trouble raising funds for transportation back to school.

This year, when school opened in January, the school had 127 students back in attendance. Once government issued a statement on the closure of schools, this raised a bit of concern as we were unsure if these numbers would decrease once schools were open again, however, as of the 4th February, the school has reported 154 students in attendance. That’s an 18% increase!

It has been tough ensuring students make it back to the classroom. We are thrilled to see an 18% increase in students who have returned post school closures.

It’s been a tough couple of months shifting things around, arranging and rearranging things in order to ensure all sponsored students are receiving all the support that they need in order to excel in their studies and move on to become independent and responsible people in their communities. We want to make sure that the education and mentorship they receive at Rainbow Hope, is one that will set them off for a lifetime and that they are able to make the best decisions for themselves, their families and their nation.
